The son of a drummer, as well as the grandson & nephew of drummers, Robert Castelli´s interest in music & drumming began at a very early age. He learned the basics from his father at the age of 8. He started private lessons as well as classes in music theory in high school, where he played regular gigs with one of his substitute teachers. It was at this time that he started playing professionally all over the NY/Tri-State area. In his college years he studied Theory & Composition, Piano, Guitar, Orchestra Percussion & Drums at the Westchester Conservatory of Music, State University of N.Y. & Drummers Collective NYC. Over the years he has studied with some of the most well known drummers in New York & the world including, Gary Chester, Kim Plainfield, Ed Soph, Tony “Thunder” Smith, Robbie Gonzalez, Robbie Ameen, Horacio el negro Hernandez & Joe Ascione. His playing has been written about in The NY Times online, Cadence Magazine, Jazz Halo Belgium & Drums & Percussion Germany. His cds as a leader received critical acclaim from some of the most widely read magazines & websites in The U.S.A, U.K. & Europe including Jazzwise Magazine London, Drummer Magazine UK, www.thejazzmann.com(UK) Time Out London, www.abstractlogix.com (USA), Musik etc, Canada & many others.

In addition to playing & composing music for Musical Theater in NY & Austria, he has performed at many venues & festivals in the U.S.A., U.K. & Europe including The Bell Atlantic Jazz Festival NY, Oldies Festival, Dodd Stadium, CT. w/the original Chiffons, Block Island Festival, RI. & many more. In Austria at Porgy & Bess World Music Festival, Vienna, Ig-Jazz & Blues Festival & Salam Orient Festival. With his Trio of Boom & Boom Quartet at Porgy & Bess, Hummin´& Drummin´ Festival, Ig-Jazz & Blues Festival with some of the finest musicians in Austria (Elias Meiri, Peter Strutzenberger, Tom Müller, Werner Feldgril, Roland Stonek, Rens Newland & Herwig Grandischnig to name a few).

Some of the best musicians on the London jazz scene have played or guested with his Boom Quartet including:
Nic Meier, Mornington Lockett, Patrick Bettison, Davide Mantovani, Gilad Atzmon, Dave O´Higgins, Greg Heath & Brandon Allen. They have performed at some of the U.K´s top Jazz Venues like Pizza Express Jazz Club, London, 606 Club, Hideaway, Wakefield Jazz, Matt & Phred´s, Kings Place, London and at The Marlborough Jazz Festival & The Brecon International Jazz Festival.
